I have dial-up so used to slow. Lately having trouble accessing sites, gmail. Now not getting YouTube. Getting message to enable Javascript--I did. Message that Flashplayer should be updated. I did. Nothing. Talked to Dell for 2 weeks. Recc "retstore computer' until the told me Dell no longer makes anything to install on my 2001 computer. Is everything shutting down?

If you're running Windows XP in that Dell OptiPlex GX240 with only 128 MB of RAM and a 56K dial-up connection, you've already got 2 things working against it for watching on-line video.

That measly amount of RAM is making that desktop run like a snail, and the dial-up connection is too slow to allow video data to be transferred fast enough to be viewed properly.

That desktop supports up to 1024 MB of RAM and uses PC133 modules. 256 MB modules are selling for $19.98 and 512 MB modules are selling for $29.98 at the MEMORYX site. Increasing the RAM amount to 512 MB or 1024 MB will drastically increase the performance and speed of that desktop. You still have the dial-up connection issue to deal with though.

Do you have both Adobe Flash Player 10.0.32.18 and Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.16 installed?

Hello-- sorry about connect by email. this is my first time with this--the message didn't come up after clicking on the thread (???) so it was a bit confusing for a minute. Anyway, thank you both for your very helpful information. I had old versions of Flash Player installed--I uninstalled them (following googled directions). I INSTALLED Adobe Flash Player Active X. I do not have the Sun Java Runtime... I went back online this a.m. and the message at YouTube was the same: You either have Javascript off or an old version of Flash Player. Then there was the little icon of Flash Player to install. This is getting more and more confusing. I will do my best and get back to you soon. Thanks again!

I mentioned that I had been talking with Dell for the last 2 weeks. they transferred me all over the place! They were talking about my getting something to "restore" my computer but later discovered Dell doesn't even make anything to help my machine anymore!. the new 7 and Vista will not work for me. They were suggesting things that cost upward of $300! Are you guys saying that with the RAM increaser software that my problem will be solved and that this machine can go for a few more years?? I am on a fixed inc and cannot afford anything new.

Hi fallforward Go here and do a scan http://www.crucial.com/

This will tell you what your computer has for RAM and what it can be upgraded to . It will also say what type of RAM is acceptable for your machine . You can purchase it locally but check prices at various locations if you can . It will greatly improve your computer performance but as Flavallee has explained you still have the dial-up connection to deal with . If you are not restricted to dial-up by location you may wish to call a local internet provider and ask about Lite Speed . Not all ISP's have it but if they do it is the next step up from dial-up and maybe a few dollars a month more . This will also increase the download speed for videos and be much more enjoyable for you . Also frees up the telephone line .

http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/ Did you follow this link and do a scan then update anything it finds needing updates ?

fallforward:

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties.

In the General tab, what's listed for the processor type and speed, and what's listed for the amount of RAM?

----------------------------------------------------------------

You need to install Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.16.. Java and Flash are both needed to properly view all the contents at different websites.

Decline to install any extra crap it offers.

----------------------------------------------------------------

With more RAM and a faster internet connection(if you can get one where you live), you can get plenty of more use out of that old desktop.

I'm running Windows XP in an old Dell OptiPlex GX110, which is even older than yours.

Thanks for the reply-- At My Computer I got the following: 128MB RAM, 62Mb available, ComputerIntel (R), 1.50GHz, 4 CPU, 1500MHz I tried t install the Sun Java (googled SJ) but it wouldn't "take"....could it be that some of my systems are so damaged that I can't even make THATt happen? I am still getting the "you have Javascript turned off or using old version of Adobe Flash".

I got into the site yu recommended. there are several upgrades listed. how do i know which one is for my computer? Will I need professionl assistance to install them??

Here is the link to SJRE 1.6.0.16. Click the green icon to download and save it.

Close all open windows, then double-click the saved file to install it.

That's all there is to it.

After it's been installed, you can delete the file that you downloaded and saved.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Your Dell OptiPlex has almost twice the processor speed(1.5 GHz vs. 800 MHz) and supports twice as much RAM(1024 MB vs. 512 MB) as my Dell OptiPlex.

Once you add more RAM, you can run Windows XP very well in it.
