I'm trying to bring an elderly laptop back into service but I'm getting problems on Windows Update. I have the message "You're not up to date - Your device is missing important security and quality fixes". This is Windows 10 Version 1909.

Can anyone help or advise please?

Is there anything on this laptop besides Windows? If not, create the installation media using the Media Creation Tool with the latest version of Windows and do a fresh install.

Do you have a friend or relative who is somewhat computer literate? It is really not difficult, but if you are reluctant and/or intimidated, it may not be for you.

It may be too far out of date, but I would have thought it would see the latest version updates for Windows 10? Does it attempt to download anything?

If not, you may need to manually update it to a newer version. Download Windows 10 Use the Update Now option.

A clean install would be more beneficial but you should be at least able to update via this link.

A clean install would be the best option when it comes to bringing Windows 10 up to date to the version, 22H2. Just be sure to make a backup of your personal files including any photos you have on the laptop. At the same time, ensure that you keep your personal files and apps on the computer. Please see the below instructions on how to do this.

How do I clean install Windows 10 without losing apps?

Yes, you can reinstall Windows 10 within the OS. Go to settings > update and security > recovery. Under "reset this pc," click "get started." Choose "remove everything" to reinstall Windows while removing your files or "keep my files" to reinstall without losing personal data.

Reinstall Win 10 Fresh Install

Download the win 10 tool run it to recreate the flash drive – Must be minimum 8GB

Download Windows 10

Watch this video
How To Install Windows 10 From USB - YouTube

In the video at 2:35 Where to install Windows. Highlight each partition and delete.
Then install on the unallocated space.

In the video at 2:54 you will notice it restarts the computer.
When you are doing this and you get to that point Remove the usb stick whilst it is restarting.
Also if you want to setup a local account instead of logging in with a Microsoft account
Turn off your wireless network and or remove the network cable.
This point is 3.32 in the video - Choose I don't have internet.
If you want to log in with a Microsoft account then leave the network as is.

Before doing any install, it is a good idea to go to the support page for your system. Download the drivers you are going to need i.e. chipset, sound, video, wireless, etc. Whilst Win10 has a lot of native drivers, Microsoft drivers are designed for ease of use and are NOT designed for any type of performance. Store these drivers on another usb or you can even just make a folder on your install usb when you are finished making the install usb. Copy the drivers into that folder.

When you are finished with the Windows install, then install your drivers.

  • Chipset or Motherboard
  • Sata or hard drive
  • Video adapter
  • Network interface card (NIC)
  • Audio
  • Touchpad
  • Any other hardware drivers needed for your particular model.
Reboot after installing the drivers

Thanks for all the help and advice, it is really appreciated. I tried using the Windows Update Assistant which went through all the three steps but in the end I got the "Something went wrong" message with the error code0x80070652.

I'll watch the YouTube video and read all the other links. Thanks again for all the help.

That error could mean something is preventing the updating, like a security program, or the windows update install files may be corrupt. (There is a folder that holds the update files Windows downloads).

either way, it may take longer to troubleshoot and fix than just reinstalling Windows so let us know how you would like to proceed.

Thanks again for all the help, the problem has now been fixed.

The company that supplies the security software I use sent me a link to the update assistant similar to the ones above but with a different number at the end. This worked although the complete update took quite some time but all seems to be working well. The version now is 22H2.

Excellent!

How to mark a thread solved.

Above your first post in this thread, but below the black bar, on the right-hand side, you will see a "kebab" menu (three vertical dots). Click that and select Edit Thread. You will see a drop down in front of the thread title that says "Prefix". Drop that and "Solved" should be one of your options.

Real simple, huh? Who needs a dedicated button that does this in a single mouse click? ;-)
