I have two PCs I use daily that are hooked into the same router. One works just fine, The older machine recently has gound to a halt. I takes forever for applications to open, the internet is slow, and Thunderbird email works at a snails pace. I just ran spybot and it found nothing. Here is my hijack this log.

Thanks in advance for any help.

help!

I got a virus on my desktop yestrday and immeadiately ran my avg antivirus. It found 15 infections. While trying to fix them, the profram crashed. When I rebooted, i got the infanous login-logout loop.

Same thing happens when I log in using safe mode. I have treid using the Recovery console and doing this fix:

Here is the solution to the logon - logoff issue in Windows XP.

Enter the Recovery Console

Boot the system using the Windows XP CD-ROM. In the first screen when the Setup begins, read the instructions press "R" (in the first screen) enter the Recovery Console. Type-in the built-in Administrator password to enter the Console. You'll see the prompt reading C:\Windows (Or any other drive-letter where you've installed XP)

Type the following command and press Enter.

CD SYSTEM32
(If that does not work, try CHDIR SYSTEM32)

COPY USERINIT.EXE WSAUPDATER.EXE

but i get a message that "the system cannot find the file specified."

I also tried this:

>Do you have your windows XP CD? If you do, I want you to put it in and turn on your computer. When you are given the message press any key to boot from cd..., press a key and Windows Setup will start. At the first screen where you have to enter input, hit R to enter the Recovery Console. Then you will have to hit 1 to log into your windows installation and then just hit Enter for the Administrator password because it is normally blank unless you changed it. Once you are at the command prompt C:\WINDOWS I want you to type chkdsk /p /r. This will run a VERY THOROUGH check of both your hard drive and also your windows installation files and replace any that are missing/corrupt. Once it's done, type Exit and take out your Windows XP cd. Your computer will reboot itself. When it reboots, try to boot into Windows normally.<

The process found one error and said it fixed it, but i still got the loop.

Obviouisly, I am writting this message from a different computer.

Please help

I was able to use the recovery console to look at the system32 directory. I noticed there was no userinit.exe file. I found the file in the dll cache folder and copied it ti the sytstem 32 directory. I then was able to login.

However, I got a message that AVG antivius was unable to load.

I opened c cleaner>tools> startup and there were 8 *.exe files in my temp directory that are obvious viruses. I deleted these entries from my startup.

What steps should I take now to remove all malware/viruses?

I can not access the internet from that machine yet
