Windows update and KB issues

I downloaded and installed Python 3.8 on my windows 8.1 PC. When I tried to run the program, I got the error message which said something like "a crt .dll file is missing from your computer". The same message popped up while trying to install MS visual studio 2019 community version. I contacted MS tech support and was told to install the kb2999226 update on my computer. I downloaded the update file and after the standalone installer searched for updates on my computer, I got this message: "this update is not applicable to your computer". There is also the issue of currently not being able to search for windows updates and getting this error code: 8024402F.

Kindly assist as I really need to be able to install both visual studio and python 3. This is the only PC I have got.

Thank you.

Install the Windows 8.1 version of KB2919442 from here :-
https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=42135

Next download and install this :- https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=42335
If necessary install the updates manually in the following order: clearcompressionflag.exe, KB2919355, KB2932046, KB2959977, KB2937592, KB2938439, and KB2934018.

Finally install the Windows 8.1 64 bit version of KB299226 from here :-
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/2999226/update-for-universal-c-runtime-in-windows

Installing the above might also fix your Windows Update.

Hello Allan,

Many thanks for your detailed and methodical response to my question. It proved very helpful in sorting out my issues - they have been sorted now.

However, let me mention that the contents (the windows "KB" update files) are no longer located at the links to some of the sites you posted above. I was able to find them by manually searching for them here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/search

Thanks again.

Glad it's sorted :)

Thanks for telling me about the link problem, I've edited the 1st one in post #2 and all 3 work now.
