I am using windiws 98 se with 256 ddr ram AMD 1.33 gigs geforce 2 video 64 megs 30 gig western digatal smart 2 SIS735 chip set ran disk defrag a month ago ran good now every time I run disk defrag msg says data changing & restarts will not complete all so check drive for errors states that i have programs running in the backround or a program is writting to my hard drive & keeps restarting I am using AVG virus program turn it off went I defrag only the virus program states everything is good all so smart 2 says everything ok How do I find out whats running in the backround{tried ctrl alt delete} & find out what is changing data on my hard drive thank you

Go to Start > Run and type msconfig in the Open: box
On the General tab, uncheck all items listed under Selective startup (make sure that Selective startup is selected)
Hit apply and OK and restart Windows
This starts Windows with only the basics running; Insures nothing will interfere with ScanDisk and Defrag
Run ScanDisk and Defrag, when ready go into msconfig and select Normal startup and restart Windows
On the General tab, uncheck all items listed under Selective startup (make sure that Selective startup is selected)
Hit apply and OK and restart Windows

dont forget to turn off your screen saver which will kick in at some point too.
I have found that doing these things in safe mode is better.
