Windows 7 Media Player - Disable Auto Run/Auto Play

I would like to completely disable auto run / auto play in Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 7, and I cannot find a way to do so. I've searched the web endlessly, and there are lots of suggestions, but nothing works. I have disabled every type of auto run / auto play I can find, but if Windows Media Player is open and I insert a flash drive, CD, or DVD, whatever I'm playing is interrupted by what was inserted even if it's not media. Just a plain, blank flash drive does this.

Has anyone else been able to figure this out?

That dialog box is for Windows auto play / run. I'm referring to Windows Media Player behavior which operates completely independently of any Windows setting, and it only performs an action if WMP is already open. That's what I'm trying to prevent. No, I haven't had any luck. I've been looking for months and have not had any responses here either.

Sorry that I did not understand.

With WMP open, & playing a commercial audio CD, I inserted a flash drive with data.

The da dum sounded, but the CD continued to play.

I know you note that you have tried many maneuvers. Have you tried to set WMP to its default settings?

Safe mode?

A pain in the arse, but have you tried on a freshly formatted / installed W7 box? Perhaps the issue is related to a device driver. Non W7 codec?

I wish I could be of more assistance.

I don't know what default settings in WMP you're referring to. I never customized it in any way. This problem has been happening since the first day I used WMP, so there's no point in spending a week reinstalling everything.

I'll poke around on a test system and see what I can find. I'm not too keen on uninstalling a major system component. In my experience, that doesn't always work out too well. I also use Media Center with a TV tuner, so I don't want to screw that up in the process.

Thanks for replying and brainstorming.
