The game I am talking about is NASCAR Racing 2003 Season by Papyrus.
Usually I haven't had any real problems with the game. I also always disable things like antivirus before I turn on the game.
So I was playing today and unexpectedly when I was having a very good run with my car, the picture on the screen disappeared and the screen went black, with the sound looping over and over again.
Eventually a box came up saying something like "NASCAR Racing 2003 Season has encountered an error and needs to close. Would you like to send an error report?" Now this message came up while the sound was still looping and the screen was still black.
Normally if a program crashes or something, the program completely closes and then the error box comes up. But with the game, the screen was still black and the sound was still looping while the box came up.
I tried to click "Send Error Report" but nothing happened. The sound was still looping, and the hard drive activity light on my computer tower was a steady green. I did a CTRL+ALT+DEL in hopes of being able to kill the task, but it didn't come up.
I was forced to do a hard shutoff of my computer using the power button that I use to turn the computer on.
The computer restarted normally and it seems to be working ok. I tried the game for a second again and everything *appeared* to be fine, although I haven't tried to redo that particular race over again.
An "Application Error" event was stored under the Application tab in the Event Viewer:
Any ideas why it would freeze like that (image flicker to a black screen with the sound looping) instead of the game "freezing" like a typical game does with the image still on the screen, or just crashing to desktop.
I'm not sure why this would happen... any ideas of what I can do to prevent it or was it some random thing?
Also, I was on the game for a while (a long while), and I just turned the furnace on in my room, so could overuse for an extensive period cause it? I don't know...

I rarely have problems with this computer and any games. I've never had this particular game freeze on this computer at all like that over the last 3 years- ever since I had the game. In fact- I was just thinking this morning to myself "boy I love my computer. My games never freeze on it but my brother's computer freezes all the time, I'm lucky" only to have it freeze on me today.
