Solved: Vista won't connect to the internet

I am running Vista and i was connected to the internet via a wireless USB adapter. This was until it decided not to connect to the internet anymore. At first i thought it was the adapter so i then tried to connect it via a Cat 5 Ethernet cable. The Ethernet was recognized but there was still no connection to the internet. Under Network connections in control panel it said Local Area Connection: Enabled, but IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity are "Not Connected." Then i thought it maybe the NIC but i bought and installed another only to be left with the same problem. Also it is not the cable as it connects fine to my fathers laptop. Help would be greatly appreciated.

can you post make and model of pc
also a ipconfig /all

ipconfig /all

TWO Methods to do that - some people have problems with ONE----

ONE ---------------------------------
start
run
cmd
ipconfig /all

rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

TWO -----------------------------------------------

Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window and type:

IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

Host Name..............:Callums_PC
Primary Dns Suffix ...:
Node Type..............:Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled...:No
WINS Proxy Enabled..:No

I'm assuming the last two lines are whats causing me the problem but how do
I fix them.

Those lines are NOT a problem, so how about posting the COMPLETE IPCONFIG /ALL output?

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Well, that's certainly odd.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.

  1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
  2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
  3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

Under network adapters -
Realtek RTL8168B/8111B Family PCI-E Gigabyte Ethernet NIC (On board), and
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC

Neither display a red cross and no other items in device manager display a ? or !

Something is seriously corrupted or missing from the networking configuration here.

Try this first.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows Vista.

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

If that doesn't change the indications, try a Vista SFC Repair. maybe that will help.

Unfortunately these solutions brought no resolve to the problem.
Command netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log failed. It returned the message.

"Reseting echo request, failed.
Access denied.

There's no user specified settings to be reset."

The problem seemed to be a result of me uninstalling zonealarm and it still remaining, in a fragmented state, on my hard drive. Reinstalled zonealarm. Problem solve.

Thanks for your help guys greatly appreciated :D
