[solved]Irfanview Problem

I have used Irfanview for a long time and just started having a problem.

I am on a laptop with limited a viewing area and when I do a PrtScreen and open Irfanview and paste it in I get the whole screen with a scroll bar on the side to be able too see the enture capture. I use to be able to crop something out even though some of the image would scroll out of view as I was cropping it and after selecting "crop selection" I would be able to see all of it with an available scroll bar and could post it somewhere like here and have the whole image available for viewing.

Now when I do this what scrolls out of the range, even though it is still in the cropping borders is gone when I click "crop selection".

I uninstalled Irfanview and reinstalled it to no avail.

What am I missing.

I have kept fooling around with this problem and came up with a work-around but still can't understand why it will not show the whole image inside the cropping box.

I cropped it like I have been doing and then re-cropped the same image and used the scroll bar to get it back centered and below is the results. This wasn't necessary before and I am just wondering what I could have done to cause this problem.

Hiya Deke!

I haven't the foggiest idea why this has happened to you, but let me suggest a work-around . . .

Go to View, Display Options, and select Fit images to window and then close IrfanView to save the setting. now, every time you open IrfanView, and paste an image (or open one) it will fit within the window space, with no scrollbars.

hitting the + and - keys will zoom in and out

Hope that helps.

Good Afternoon Randy

I had it set to the default 1:1 and changed it to the one below as you suggested.

The image is not quite as clear but your suggestion works for the bigger ones.

Thanks and have a great day even though you are working(scary word for me) and take care.

Just tried some of my stored images of the grandkids and your suggestion works great and the images are clear and I don't have to scroll.

I thought I had tweaked all the settings in Irfanview for maximum benefits but just goes to show that a fresh perspective is very beneficial.

Yeah, shrinking the image down to fit in the window will give you bad quality, but that is only viewable quality. The actual dimensions of the image are unchanged, just the way you are viewing it.

Also, if do Alt+PrtScreen, it will only capture the active window, not the entire Screen.

last option would be to use a screen Capture program. I use Gadwin PrintScreen
so I can manually select the area I want to capture.

Yeah, I've tried it, but I leave Gadwin running as a process, and everytime I hit Print Screen, the Gadwin application takes over, I select the area I want and double-click it, and it is saved as a file.

no biggie, just giving an option!;):D

Randy

After I click PrtSc I get the preview window of the clipboard with the various control buttons on the right side to continue capture and so forth.

I am having trouble doing the "select and double click for a capture.

I tried using Irfanview as the device to open with.

Should I leave everthing set at the default to capture as you mentioned.

PS-I finally found the Help file in that preview window so maybe I will now get it set up correctly.

I've attached screenshots of my setup. Since I am saving them as files, and IrfanView is already the default program to handle jpg's, it opens with IrfanView. I tested using IrfanView to open the file, and it opens it immediately after double-clicking the selected area.

yo yea randy if you make a bigger file small it will have better quality, you'll notice it in games
If you want to resize an image, you are correct, but what Deke was mentioning was the zoom function to fit an image in a smaller window, which does not affect the "actual" size and quality of the file, just how it is being displayed at the moment.

Thanks Randy.

You might know the only the only "Capture" item I didn't try was "Rectangular".

Just gave up to soon. Works like a charm.

Thanks for sticking with me on this.

PS-This works great on text I want to save. Before I had to copy and paste to a text file.

Randy-One more thought on this.

I thought I had read all the help file but missed this:

"Rectangular capture areas are not automatically captured after you press the hot key. You must specify the area of the image that you want to capture. Position the cursor where you want to anchor the user-defined area drag to create a rectangular area capture. You can fine tune your capture by moving the sizing handles. After making any adjustments, press Enter or right-click anywhere to finish the capture."

Yes, and you can also double-click the captured area.

If you change your mind, or p[ressed the Print Screen by accident, then pressing Escape will close the capture screen.

If you do a lot of screen captures, it is a very handy program indeed, especially for being free!!;):D

but back to your opening problem . . . do you care about solving it?? It must be a setting somewhere that has changed, becaue it I try to crop int he scrollbar areas, the image moves with the click and drag.

If you don't care, then maybe we can let this thread die?

Mine also scrools up too but the portion that scrolls off the viewable screen is cropped off when I click the "crop selection" and this didn't use to do this.

Here is an image of the OE Message rule box that I selected with the cursor and used the "crop selection". While I was cropping the top part went up under the Irfanview toolbar and that is what got cut off. Here is a Gadin Printscreen version and my Irfanview version.

One other thing with Gadin PrSr is I can't get the Hot Key to change.

I can't duplicate your problem, and am using IrfanView 3.91 on a Win2k system.

If uninstalling and resinstalling didn't work, nor did using different versions, I'd say it has something to do with another program that is running at the same time conflicting with it somehow??

One other slight difference is I am running 3.92 instead of 3.91.

I will just use Gadin for most of my captures. The only downside is if they don't fit on this pisant size laptop screen. My wife is about ready to strangle me because I will not upgrade to a full desktop.

Thanks for all the info.
