I have a Vostro 1500. When you turn the power button on, you see the Dell logo and then the screen goes black. You can tell the lcd is on, just nothing on it.

I hit F12 and tried to boot to a windows cd, and it recognizes the windows cd and hit and key to boot to cd. When I do it goes starts to load , and about 15 seconds later, everything goes black, cd stop spinning , but power stays on. No fan etc.

Same results when hooked to external monitor.

I also can boot to the Dell diagnostics and ran everything and everything passed except the battery health. It will run the diagnostics fine, for hours, everything passes. But when you try to load windows or boot to cd, no go.

I can get in the bios fine.

I have tried this with the battery in and battery out. Same results both ways. The diagnostics did say the battery was bad, but it is the same reults even when the battery is not installed and I am running on adapter.

Motherboard maybe ? Motherboard diagnostics passed also . I just don't know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Shut it down and remove AC power and the battery, then remove the cmos battery for 15 minutes, reinstall the cmos battery, big battery, and connect it to AC power, turn it on and enter the bios and set the date and time, save changes on exit, then see if it will boot into windows, if it does, update the bios immediately.

Turned out to be a bad hard drive. All the diagnostic test showed the hard drive to be fine, but I replaced it with another one I had, and it booted up fine.

Thanks Mumbodog for replying.:)
