I just bought the HP Probook 4540s and also had need for a second hdd. ( I replaced the original hdd with an SSD and wanted to use that for storage).

I also was going to use the dvd drive, but it is so flimsy, I got this instead.

May not be quite as convenient, but since I carry my laptop in an attache case, it's no problem.

They do make hdd caddies for laptops, but Probook doesn't have the space to insert it.

You would still need a way to connect it to the MOBO.

It's not only my opinion.

They are made cheaply and very light.

Breakage is a constant.

If the laptop or Probook does not come with an extra space to insert another hard drive the only solution to install another hard drive as a backup will be either by using the DVD bay or use an external hard disc drive. There is no space available inside the laptop to insert another hard drive (some models may have them).

I just called HP to confirm and I was correct - can't be done.

Your only choices are the adapter I recommended, an external case for hdd or an external hdd, such as My Passport, etc.

The adapter I recommended IMO is best, because air flows freely around it.

One thing I did when I installed this was to remove the bezel off the original cd-rom drive and swapped it to the new caddy to keep that original look of the laptop. This might work for you depending on how your bezel is installed.
