What does scandisc say?

 

I ran a full thorough scandisk two weeks ago, no problems. Ran standard last night, no problems.
Also, just went through the archives on this site and found Q171195 from MS, but this article is for windows 95. I've got win98 SE.

 

Except for my computer,Windows explorer, and IE[5?]-everything else works normally??

 

Yes, as far as I have taken it. I can run programs, get on the net (I prefer Netscape). I can only set to my cd and DVD by going 'start/run'.

 

Correction on that last sentence. I can only get to my CD/rw and DVD by 'start/run', to run a program or setup.

 

Have you loaded any type of Windows updates recently? Any updates to InternetExplorer?

About two weeks ago, after running defrag and scandisk, I installed Design CAD and Kai's photosoap2. I have run both programs with no problems up until yesterday afternoon,except I have a problem with photosoap2 in that it will not print. I put in a call to Kai a week ago for some help but no one has answered. I haven't tryied to use photosoap2 for four or five days.
This one has me stumped.

 

Do you have IE5? If so, try running the repair tool, though I doubt it will help. It can't hurt and that is the first thing I would try.

Start>Run, type in msinfo32 and press enter. Click on Tools>IE Repair.

If msinfo32 is not found then repair this way, Start>Settings>add/RemovePrograms. Double left click on Microsoft InternetExplorer5. A menu will appear with 3 options. Take the repair option.

BTW, if the "Know Fix" is the one I am thinking about, then I might also suspect it may be coming back to haunt you. When I first saw it I was wondering what the effects would be overtime of using it. I could be wrong but I have my suspicions. That's why I keep asking if you have done any Windows updates of any kind. What I suspect will happen eventually is MS will make a change in how they handle VXD's or issue a new VXD/update a current one and any systems that had the fix run on them will start to crumble. I have had W98 since it's inception and if kept clean there is no need for these so called "Fixes". They are nothing but trouble waiting to happen. Once again I may be wrong or I might not. I guess only time will tell. I, however, would never recommend that anyone load any NON-MS "Fixes" to Windows onto their systems. I am sure others might disagee but that my opinion for what it's worth.

You might try rerunning the "Fix" to re-extract the VXD's to c:\windows\system\vmm32 folder from your Windows CD. That is all it really does. It should replace them unless they have some hook in it not to replace them if they exist.

I have seen several infodocs on 'vxd vmm' errors for win95 but none for win98. Got any ideas????

 

I don't know in this case specifically but often info about 95 also applies to 98 unless it specifically says that it doesn't. often it was written for 95 and 98 doesn't change a particular function when it is released. anyone know if vxdvmm is the same in both? Bob

Okay I tried 'msconfig' and 'msinfo' and that didn't work.
I can't open my computer, ie, control panel, printers, network neighbor hood. If boot up in safe mode they work.
I'm going to try to do some backups, if I can get to my CD/RW. Then try reinstalling win98 and the 98 updates. If that doesn't work I won't have any choice but to rebuild.

Please help if you can. I really don't want to have to rebuild.>>

Try uninstalling BSOD and remove any refernces to it.

Then from MS-DOS Mode run: SCANREG /RESTORE

and select an older version of the Windows Registry.

Also wondering :
Does the area where an error occurs point to a cause -like trying to use an area reserved for something else or something else already in the area it is supposed to use? Anyone know?

 

Just let everyone know I couldn't find a fix for the problem. I'll be blowing away my PC and rebuilding in the next few days. I was able to run my CD writer program and make copies of all data.
I am in the process of checking for all of my software and specific drivers I'll need for the rebulid.

Rebuilt my PC, loaded software and it crashed again after loading the software for my Mobilion 6000 from Sharp. I loaded the Windows CE software to connect to my handheld by serial port and all was well. But when I loaded the Sharp software for extra software support and backup, it gave me drive c: errors. Tried rebooting and restoring the registry but no go. Had to reformat and start all over. I'll be notifing Sharp. Just wanted to let you know what was the answer to my PC crashing.
