Hi all,
have an Optipex 780 USFF and am thinking of upgrading the processor.
Dell specs say that the most powerful processor this will take is a Core 2.

I'm just wordering if anyone has tried installing a more powerful ship in these and what youve tired.

Ideally looking for a core 2 quad but am aware some of these have a higher TDP.

I'm not bothered about how hot it gets, but am just looking to see if it's compatible with the board etc.

Tom :)

From my understanding, ALL the 780's EXCEPT the USFF can support the up to the Q9650 but because of the heat it generates a USFF will not be able to handle it. Its possible it might work however because of the heat generated by it I WOULD NOT install it in such a TINY case.

Thanks Dude,

As i say i don't really care how hot it gets, just whether it will recognize that processor,
It's all about the need for speed, as i'm going to stick windows 8.1 on it.

I know from the Dell Tech Specs they don't configure this with more than a dual core, but I've seen online people are selling this with the Q9650 3.00GHz chip fitted aftermarket.

So i'm going to give it a go...
...I'll let you know if it catches fire. :)

Also planning to add 8GB memory + 240GB SSD, should fly...

YOu best be concerned with how hot it gets. If it OVerheats, for one thing your QUAD core chip, may not be any faster than your current dual core. (Yes overheating can cause slowness) So if it gets hot and fries everything you are aout all that money

Also IDK how familiar you are with Propietary systems but, they have OEM BIOS' so they control the upgrades allowed ,for the CPU's, , now whilst every other 780 says quad is accepted except for the USFF, its possible it may not work because of the BIOS. However In my opinion i would put my money into a used PC from the Egg. You can get a system with what youre looking for for prolly right around 250-300 bucks. AND windows 8.1 is also supposed to be VERY LIGHT meaning it shouldn't take much to run it.
