Hi, My uncle cannot log into Windows because somehow the user account names are gone from the Windows XP login screen. I mean I can't do a system restore without logging into Windows can I? I tried booting with the Windows XP installation cd. I got to a point where I thought I was about to reinstall windows but I wasn't sure so I stopped. I would rather not reinstall Windows for him if there is a way to get back onto the Windows desktop. Someone let me know what I should try. Thanks.

It is Windows XP Home Edition SP2. I tried to boot in safe mode by pushing the F8 button. Went to the login screen still blank. No user accounts. Just the XP blue screen. Also tried Last known good configuration when the computer worked. Still the same thing. No user accounts. Weird. I asked him if he installs windows security updates and he said no. lol That may be one reason. He doesn't scan for spyware either. I am guessing years of not doing this has caught up. Probably a trojan virus.

What version of XP?

If it is Pro, then at the login prompt, press Ctrl-Alt-Del-Del. Type in the user name administrator. Hopefully either the password is blank or you know it.

If it is Home, boot to safe mode and see if you can log in as administrator that way.[/QUOTE]
