Hi,

I don't know how but all of a sudden I faced this issue whereby when connected through modem directly I am getting limited or no connectivity and can't acces interent. However when connected through Phone adapter( Internet cable to modem-->modem-->phone adapter-->computer) I am getting good connection.

Don't knwo what went wrong ,but now I want my laptop to get directly connected through modem. pls help

I tried manually setting the IP address ( I ran ipconfig , when connected through phone adapter, that is when I was connected , copied the ip address, default gateway, subnet mask and connection suffix and then changed the setup by connecting laptop directly to Modem , then manually assigned the ip address, default gateway, subnet mask and connection suffix obtained from above steps) but this also didn't help.

I have a windows XP, but don't know if it has SP2 . I never applied any patch. How to know if its SP2 or not ( if that is the cause of the problem)

Modem Mdel: Motorola SB5101

It's possible that Comcast has registered the Phone Adapter's MAC address (think of it as a SSN) so when you connect directly, their servers doesn't recognise your PC's MAC address.

I have no clue what you mean by Phone Adapter. What is the make and model? It sounds like it's a router of some kind. So when you do the gateway in the URL section that's why you are getting the adapter's information.

(PS I Have comcast too)

There is no need to 'bump' every hour. Once a day, as the guidelines suggest, is sufficient to get people's attention.

I think that you finally said that "phone adapter" means your VOIP router, right?

And you are unable to connect a computer directly to the modem, right? There is at least one definite reason for that--you are trying to use a private IP address! Change it back to 'obtain IP auto' and 'obtain DNS auto.' And remember to power cycle (unplug it for a moment) the modem when switching devices connected to it.

Finally, I think you said that what you really want to do is use both the VOIP router and a wireless router. If so, use the VOIP as the primary and do it the following way.

JohnWill's procedure for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!
