Kodak DX4330 Camera not being recognized

Hi guys, I need a little help.

I have a Kodak Easyshare Camera DX4330. For some reason, the camera is not transferring its pictures. When I plug the camera into the USB port and turn it on, a small screen comes up and says it is retrieving contents and recognizes the camera. However it does not automatically transfer. So I tell the camera to "transfer now" and it says a camera could not be found.

Now here's where it gets weird: when I turn on my printer, it recognizes the printer as the camera and wants to transfer the photos out of the printer. I click "OK and it always says "Transfer interrupted. The file exists but may be damaged." And that is the end of it. I've tried it with the camera plugged in simultaneously and with just the printer. The results are the same.

The printer I own is an HP PSC 2175 All-In-One. I've had this printer for about a year and the camera slightly longer. The two have coexisted without any problems until recently. I'm using Windows XP. I haven't installed any new components onto this computer to cause this. The Kodak EasyShare software is Vers. 3.4.0. I have tried updating both the camera and printer drivers and the problem persists.

If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Under Windows XP, the camera will (should) show up as a "removeable drive" under "My Computer" without any need for drivers or software to be loaded.

If this is happening, you can drag and drop the picture files to your HDD using Windows Explorer, to any directory of your choice. Without going near the Kodak software.

While it does not answer why its happening, the software supplied with most cameras can most often be more trouble than its worth, and under Windows XP its simply not required.

Using a good free image editor such as Irfanview to then view the photos, the whole operation becomes reliable.

It sounds like the Camera and the Printer are being confused as to identity somehow.

That points to the problem perhaps. The inability to access the "drive" could be why the camera software fails as well.

Are you logged in as an administrator?

Can you try it on another PC?

Its possible that the camera card has become corrupted perhaps, can you view the photos OK on the camera?

I have a Kodak Easy Share DX6490 camera and am having the same problem as "misterelie" about which you posted this message to. After working correctly for several months, my computer now thinks my camera is a hard drive (the other user's computer thought the camera was a printer). When I plug the camera into the USB everything looks great, the but then you cannot get the pictures. My camera works fine, the computer says the device is working properly. Somehow it is getting confused. Did you have any more ideas about this problem?

Here's an answer I got from Kodak Technical support. It worked for me, but only if your conflicts are caused by the programs listed below.

When getting an image transfer error where the camera is showing as a drive in My Computer but is not accessible and gets error messages when trying to access this drive, KODAK EASYSHARE Software may be conflicting with another manufacturer's program. The programs which are known to conflict are PowerQuest Drive Image 7, PowerQuest v2i Protector, and Partition Magic. If one of these programs is installed on the system, the camera will not mount properly. Verify the following programs are installed on the system.

* PowerQuest Drive Image 7
* PowerQuest v2i Protector
* Partition Magic

Note: PowerQuest was recently purchased by Symantec. The program names may have change to Symantec Drive Image 7 or Symantec v2i Protector.

Before uninstalling these programs, make sure they are able to be re-installed and a copy is accessible, either on CD or downloadable.

1. Verify the programs are installed on the system by opening the Control Panel, then open Add/Remove Programs.
2. Locate, select, and remove the following programs:

* PowerQuest Drive Image 7
* PowerQuest v2i Protector
* Partition Magic

3. Once these programs are removed, close all windows and restart the computer.
4. When the computer is back up and the EasyShare icon appears by the clock in the System Tray, connect the camera and attempt the transfer.
5. Once the connection and transfer are confirmed to be working properly, the PowerQuest/Symantec and Partition Magic programs can be re-installed.

Note: Uninstalling the PowerQuest or Symantec programs and then re-installing them after EasyShare is working may or may not work.

Additional Note: If working within the Windows XP operating system, changing to the Windows XP drivers is a workaround for this conflict.
However the Sharing and Favorites features between the camera and software will be lost when using the Windows XP drivers with EasyShare software.

Kudos to you, Chadnel! I had given up on the camera. Nothing had worked until I read your email. Yes, only recently I had purchased Drivemagic Backup for the PC so I could do routine backups of my computer. Never thought to associate the two problems, though.

Thank you VERY much for that assist!
