HP PSC 1410 Printer/Scanner

I have two HP PSC Printer/Scanners. One no longer advances paper to the printer head and has been the subject of a previous post. The other continues to print normally. Both printers have recently, and simultaneously, stopped scanning. HP Print & Scan Doctor v.5.7.3 suggests that there is a problem with the Device Manager and suggests a laptop Restart. Restarting does not solve the problem. Skipping the Device Manager error results in a Driver Check error and a prompt to restart the printer followed by restarting the laptop. This makes no difference. Skipping the Driver Check error results in a pass for the Device Status and then an error for the Windows (WIA) Scan and a prompt to restart etc. which I have skipped. This results in a fail for all of the checks that follow, including the Test Scan.

I have tried running a scan from Paint, but that does not work either.

The HP website is effectively useless and I suspect that the PSC1410 is no longer supported (although it does not appear in the list of redundant printers). There are no obvious drivers to download from the HP Site.

My current Laptop has no CD drive and so I cannot immediately try a reinstallation from CD. Before I invest in a cheap CD Drive for a reinstallation, has anyone any suggestions as to what might be the problem, and how to correct it. It is a bit coincidental that both printers should fail to scan at the same time (Anything to do with a win 10 update?).

Thanks Peter.
1) Relatively new Laptop. System Restore had not been activated so no roll back available.
2) The HP link should provide appropriate driver downloads. However, the compilation routine simply runs and runs without displaying any list of drivers (20 mins and no result). Hence my suspicion that HP no longer support the PSC 1410.

I went to Peter's link and selected Windows from a popup box then I was able to choose between drivers for Windows 11, 10 (32 and 64 bit), 8.1 (32 and 64 bit), 7 (32 and 64 bit), Vista (32 and 64 bit) and XP - 32 bit. So HP certainly does support your device.

What do you see under detected operating system? (mine shows the 64 bit Win 7 I'm currently using).
I clicked Choose a different OS. I then clicked on Windows to get a choice and the popup box.

Hi plodr.
The HP website shows my operating system as being Windows 10 (64 bit) - which is correct. If I ask to see available software then I get the "HP is compiling results . . . ." message and the cycling 4 squares just keep on cycling. If I choose a different OS then I have the option of choosing between Windows 11, Windows 10 (32 bit and 64 bit), Windows 8.1 (32 bit and 64 bit), Windows 8 (32 and 64 bit), Windows 7 (32 and 64bit), Windows Vista (32 and 64 bit) Windows XP (32 and 64 bit) and Windows 2000. I have not tried selecting any of these as Windows 10 (64 bit) is correct. . . . . and HP is still compiling results (more than 20 mins now).
I am going offline for a few days now so please accept my apologies for any delay in replying to future posts.

Yesterday, I was able to see a page for drivers. Today I can't and I eventually arrived here

I am using an HP printer from 2003 and our four Windows 7 computers can print to it. I like it because it is just a printer. I don't need every device in the house to print, copy and scan.

Hi Flavallee
The second PSC 1410 works fine with Win 10 on another laptop. Both PSC 1410s scanned perfectly on both Win 10 laptops previously but neither will scan now (correction - I can get one to scan using Windows Paint).
Peter
I tried using VueScan but it cannot "see" the printer.
Plodr
Thanks for the confirmation that HP no longer support the PSC 1410. Shame, it was a good little printer that just printed and scanned without fuss and no need for internet connections and instant ink. I would have stuck with my old Windows 7 laptop but the screen appears to have died on that.

On the basis that it never rains but it pours, I am now getting a boot failed message every time I start this Windows 10 laptop. If you are interested, I get:
EFI PXE 0 for IPv4 (D4-93-90-11-51-35) boot failed
followed by:
EFI PXE 0 for IPv6 (D4-93-90-11-51-35) boot failed

The laptop then starts OK but with a prompt to "Finish Setting Up" - which I ignore.

Any idea what that is all about?
Cheers. Bobc

Vuescan will only provide scanning. It does support the HP PSC 1410. However, Vuescan requires the HP driver for it to work.

That link eventually links back to the HP website (which has no drivers for the PSC 1410).

I have tried reinstalling from CD but the installation software does not recognise Windows 10 and will not install under compatibility settings for earlier versions of Windows.

HP Print and Scan Doctor reckons that the device manager for the scanner is missing or corrupted. I cannot find a reference on the c: drive for the HP scanner. or the Printer, although The Printer's print function checks out OK with HPPSD and is recognised by the laptop. I have the Scanner drivers on the CD but don't know how to get them properly installed on the laptop (assuming that is a part of the problem).

Hi Peter.
It gets worse!
I have two printers available from the Control Panel. 1. HP PSC 1410 series and 2. HP PSC 1410 series (Copy 1)
The Laptop cannot "see" HP PSC 1410 series for either printing or scanning.
The Laptop can "see" PSC 1410 series (Copy 1) and send print to it but cannot scan from it as HPPSD indicates that that there is a device manager error.
If I try to "add a printer" then the Laptop cannot detect any connected printers and I can not find any way of telling it where to succesfully look.
Windows 10 has just "forced" an update and now I cannot communicate with either HP PSC 1410 series or HP PSC 1410 series (Copy 1) and Control Panel shows a USB error. So now no print or scan.
I have switched USB ports, restarted the Laptop several times, turned off/on the printer, etc. All to no avail. I can find no way of pointing anything at the CD to obtain the relevant drivers.

Lets see if we can get it to talk to your printer as a generic printer.
DO THIS VIA CONTOL PANEL

Plug the printer in and turn on.

In the search box next to the start button

Type in control panel press enter

If control panel is in Category mode

Click on View devices and printers – Under Hardware and Sound

Click on add printer

Click on the printer I want isn't listed
Image

Click on add a local printer
Image

Click on Next
Click on use an existing port and change to usb
Image

On install Printer Driver Click on Generic in left hand column.
Click on Generic/text only
Click on next
Image

Finish the wizard and see if it prints - print a test page.

We will look for the hp driver later.
First step is to see if we can get communication to a printer

1) Hold down the Windows Key and press R to bring up the Run dialog.

2) Type services.msc then press Enter.

3) Find the Print Spooler service in the list. Right-click it, then select Stop.

4) Minimize the Services window. Hold down the Windows Key and press R to bring up the Run dialog.

5) Type or copy and paste: %systemroot%\System32\spool\printers\ then press Enter

6) Click on 1 file then select all of the files by holding CTRL and pressing A

7) Press the Delete key to delete all of the files.

8) Go back to the Services window right-click Print Spooler then select Start.

Try a test page from the generic printer again.

Plodr - thanks for that.

Peter - before I do anything else - when I started the laptop this morning, it appeared to recognise that there was a printer attached and set up an "HP PSC 1400 series (Copy 3)" printer - see pic.

I ran HPPSD on this and it sent print to the printer but the scan check fails as before - see pic.

Should I now follow your previous advice? - on which printer?

The pic above shows a document in queue for printer Copy 1
The Instructions in post#23 are not for any printer.
It will clear all documents that are stuck.

Try this first on Copy 1

Clear Print Queue

Method 1

1) Look for a printer icon in the bottom right hand corner near the clock. You may have to press the UP arrow

Image

2) Double click on the icon. Do you see a document stuck in the queue?

Image

If yes Click on printer > Cancel all documents. Also make sure there is not a tick
next to use printer offline.
Image

Forget using this for testing purposes
I ran HPPSD
Then on the screen you posted in #24 click on the copy 1 printer
Click on Manage
Click on Print a test page.
Does it print?
If not
Click on Generic printer
Click on manage
Click on Print a test page
Does it print?

If copy 1 prints
Click on start
Type in Scan
Click on Windows Fax and Scan
Click on new scan
Does it scan?

I hope the above is clear. If not remember my rule 2
If in doubt do nothing

Left click on Printer properties

After the wizard has finished
Right click on the printer
Do you have the option to scan

Hi Peter.
No "Advanced Tab" available via that route (see pic)

Re "Vuescan" - yes, tried it and it could not see the scanner (see #9)
