Hi Guys

Hopefully you could point me in right direction

I have a HP Compaq NC6000 with XP Pro SP2 - which errors on start up -

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'R' at the first screen to start repair.

What have I tried?
Put the WinXP SP2 CD into the DVD drive - same error

Pressed F10 on first HP screen to go into BIOS, enabled 'multi drive' in 'advanced > boot options' , set multi drive as first and rebooted - same error

Pressed F8 to get onto the Windows Advanced options screen
I get the same error when I try any of the following:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode
Last Known Good Configuration
Start Windows Normally
I didn't try any of the others as not sure what they do....

I noticed when I was in the 'BIOS' there was a 'tools > HDD Self-Test option'...and this is where I think the problem is....

As I click f10 to start it I am advised it will take 32mins.....after 30seconds and still at 0% of test 1(quick) I get a status change (exciting times)
The message reads
'Error: Read Failue'
Press Any Key to Continue

Has my hard drive departed this Earth to join others in hardware heaven?

Although I am relatively computer literate, I normally support software and struggle in the hardware arena - so please keep it as simpleton as possible

Cheers for your help in advance.

The only disk I have is a Windows XP SP2 disk that came with the laptop(which was bought 2nd hand).

I'm not sure if this is a full version of Windows, but I have used the disk to reload Windows on my desktop PC.

I have serial numbers for Windows for both machines (no dicky copies of Windows here)

Thanks for the quick reply

Looking at the disk, I think it may only be an SP2 disk.....as it says it's compatible with Win Home, Pro, Media Centre and Tablet PC...

You might be onto something there, although I honestly thought it was a full Windows CD.
