Probably not what you're looking for ... But I use Photoshop and occasionally make animated gifs
Frame by frame is a pain .... Sounds like that may what Gimp is trying to do ... ??? but AVI only ???

I don't know of any free video editor with the advanced capabilities of Gimp or PS Elements.

What do you want to do with video ...
Edit Camcorder videos ... Upload to YouTube ...
Add text .. Insert other videos ... Make DVDs ... etc ... ???

Yes, I did get my transparent image working in Gimp. Really like that little free piece of photo editing software. Can't recommend it enough.
