About an hour and a half ago i upgraded my 380W PSU with a CoolerMaster GX-650W and i took it for a test drive with stressing the CPU GPU and the ram and left the room and when i got back in it was really loud. Even more than my GTX260 at 87c. When i touched the PSU it was pretty warm. About the same as a GPU PCB feels like when it is 38c. Is this normal for 650W PSUs? or just the coolermaster GX series? If it is i don't even wanna know how loud 1500W PSUs are.

I'm the guy who was running
Q6600 2.4GHZ stock
8GB DDR2 800MHZ
ASUS ENGTX260 55nm 896MB GDDR3
ASUS P5QL Mobo
on a 380W PSU. Now I upgraded to a 650W PSU but at most my system should draw less than 450W.
There are waaaaaay too many unused wires here. 5 SATA 2 Molex and the 2x6+2pin PCI connectors are only being used for their 6 pins. I wouldn't say the noise bothers me or anything it's just really noticable without any headphones. My old 380W started giving me problems like you guys said it will. It turned off and rebooted when the GPU was stessed for a microsecond and sometimes not even a 3D application was running. Thankfully the last 36 hours have been kind to me after I've upgraded i saw no issue at all. Now i need a new CPU cooler and it will be a 100% stable system.

well usually fans only become loud if the bearing has started to wear out or they are faulty. I have read a review on that PSU and they said that it was the quietest PSU that they have tested which leads me to believe that yours may be faulty.

There are quiet and loud brands/models of all different sizes. So again, size/rating has no bearing on the loudness. It's a matter of the quality of the power supply, and the speed and type of the fans within the power supply.

With that being said, that model is not well reviewed, at least from the guys that I trust here: http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/11/22/cooler_master_gx_650w_power_supply_review/1

From what I can tell, the fan speed on that is not adjustable as it is on some units. It is controlled from the pw supply itself. How hot is it in the room you have the system? Do you have this system in a cabinet by chance or under a desk with limited airflow?
