can't listen to music online

What would be something to check, if you can listen to cds but not music online. Whether we open windows media player, or browse to a favorite radio station's site to listen live, we can't listen. There are no errors, it connects, buffers and looks to be playing, but there's no sound. The speakers are on and work, because we can stop and listen to a cd. I don't see any mute that is on.

Anyone have any ideas??

Thanks,

Hi there p51

Windows95, 98, ME:

On your desktop in the toolbar Click: "Start/Settings/Control Panel then double click the "Internet Options" icon. When the Internet options window pops up click the"Advanced" tab at the top of said window. In the "Settings:" menu scroll down to the "Multimedia" section. Look for "Play Sounds" and make sure it is cheched. If not check it. at the bottom of the window click "Apply" then "Ok".

If your running WindowsXP... Use this method:

Open your Internet Explorer brouser. In the top tootbar click: Tools/Internet Options. When the Internet options window pops up click the"Advanced" tab at the top of said window. In the "Settings:" menu scroll down to the "Multimedia" section. Look for "Play Sounds" and make sure it is cheched. If not check it. at the bottom of the window click "Apply" then "Ok".

See if that is the problem. Let us know how it goes

Good luck :)

Thanks for the reply Faomer! It is Win98se. Sorry about not adding that before. Windows Media is version 7. I checked the advanced internet options, and the mentioned check marks were already checked.

Give this a try...

Open your media player... At the top tool bar: Tools/Options. In the new window click the "Formats" tab. Then look in the "Available File Formats" section. Make sure they are all checked. Then click the "Network" tab. Then in the "Protocols" section... make sure all are checked. Except the "Use port" area. Unless you otherwise know that you need to use a spacific port.

Just a thought... have you recently installed a firewall?

I will have to go check the file formats. I am not certain there. I know that everything is checked in the Network tab, except the port one. It is a work pc, so we do have a firewall, but it works fine on several other pc's, mine included. I will check the formats, and get back with you.

I checked and all the file formats are selected. I was running WinMedia ver 6, so I upgraded to 7, just to make sure that it wasn't that version, by chance, plus so I could compare settings. It works fine on mine, and all of our settings appear to be the same. Is there any setting in Windows, that I may be over looking?
I will keep looking around too.

Thanks for the help,

I do the desktop support, and the admin is my boss. He hasn't blocked it. I have never had any problems before. I am betting that it is one small setting that I am overlooking, probably because I am looking too hard.
