Good afternoon,

I have googled this to try and find a specific answer but I am struggling so I thought I'd ask you wonderful people :)

I have the above set up, i'm not sure of the model of the router but it is a standard stock router from Sky, which i have had for about 8 months ( I'm not currently at home). I also have the Sky Broadband Buddy App so i can put some parental controls on the times the WIFI can be used, however my kids are getting smarter :) I'm pretty sure one of them has downloaded a VPN to her iphone and is getting around the time restrictions.

Am I able to block access to the router if she tries to connect through the VPN?, so it renders it useless, and she will only be able to access the router in the normal manner?

Thank you in advance

Chris

Restricted to certain MAC addresses?
^^^This^^^ is what you need to do. In the router's admin menu, restrict access to only specific MAC addresses. Then restrict access for your kid's device to your designated restricted times. And make sure your kids don't know the admin password (and wifi passphrase) to your router. Change them if any doubt.

HOWEVER, that will only stop her from accessing the Internet via wifi through your network and the Sky router. Since this is an iPhone, she can still access it via the cell phone network. You will have to deal with the access controls for that with your cell phone provider - assuming her account is set up as a restricted account under your account.

Good luck!

Side note: The best thing about being a grandparent is we get to hand the kids back at the end of the day!

Side note: I am not sure if this is applicable but I think that on the same plan, you can prevent other users from downloading/using apps so that may be another route.

You may need to block the app's ports. I don't think MAC filtering would work. I will need to look into that.

Worse case, you could have a device like Circle that has parenting controls on that too.

I don't see why not. MAC filtering works one of two ways. It either allows only the devices with specified MAC addresses to have access, or it blocks specified MAC addresses. Yes, MAC addresses can be spoofed, but if the kid is already that clever, they need to be encouraged to go into computer security.

Thank you for the help, it looks as though the MAC address is the way to go. I'll look into this evening once I'm back from work.

If she is accessing the internet from her mobile device plan, I don't mind.. she only has a certain amount of data and it will run out 😊
