I found the OEM key using a program called ShowKey Plus - Windows Product Information.
That key will NOT activate windows
The key it finds is NOT the key to activate windows
It is the OEM key used by Dell
activation is against the hardware hash of the computer

I suggest you download the attached - save it to your desktop
UNZIP it
then on your desktop you will see a yellow folder with LIcensing Diag
right click that and click open
then another windows will open with Licensing Diagnostics listed as a powershell file
right click that and click Run with Powershell
It may ask you to authorize by clicking Keying Y and enter to agree
then it will report extracting data
a notepad file will open
SAVE it to your desktop

Then attach it to your reply

-----------
I have just realised that you posted this discussion the 10 October windows 11 was last installed on this system on the 7 October
Installed 20231007
so am I correct in saying that you had clean/repair installed on the 7 October

Soory
I do not understand your reply
Does it ONLY mean
YES to the install date
OR yes to the - you are going to send the file

Without the file I cannot advise you further

If you did clean install reapir on 7 October what please was the reason for that - was it an attempt to solve the NOT activated please.

Providing the drive was not changed in anyway, you can do a reset .

The product page for your Dell will also have an OS Recovery that you create with an USB drive. Here is a link directly to that.

This will have (should have) the latest Windows 10 or 11 version build along with the drivers needed.

and of course make sure you back up any files you have on the desktop/docs/etc that you would need before doing any reset
I went through this process (Dell OS Recovery via USB drive) and at the very end, when it was going to reset my PC back to the original software (Windows 10 Home) I got the message "This process is not supported on your system".
I then restarted Windows and I am back where I was.

FIRST POINT - unlikely to work
Run a system file check
(16) Use System File Checker (SFC) to Repair System Files in Windows 11 Tutorial | Windows 11 Forum (elevenforum.com)
follow cmd prompt option ONE
as in yellow background
SYSTEM RESTORE will of course NOT WORK
if errors cannot be repaired.
and as below a repair install will not work in your case
=============================================================================================================

The problem is caused by corrupted files in your system
How these files relating to your digital licence activation became corrupted I do not know
The logs I asked for show the root of the problem
The Software Protection service failed to start. 0x80070005
10.0.22621.2428
Time Created: October 14, 2023 7:37:58 PM0
Although that is only one of them it is a regular event with dozens of entries dating back to the 7 October. - when of course you did your repair install

There is no problem in itself with the digital licence
------------ Clip Event log errors ------------
No Digital License errors found!
I attach a link which is heavy reading
but the base detail is that the software protection service not starting does not then allow the activation to find the licnesing files to activate windows.
The folder C:\Windows\System32\spp\store\2.0 contains the licensing data files.
I Got Windows 10 For Free When You Could, Now it's Deactivated Itself - Windows 10 Forums (tenforums.com)

I know the link talks about 10 but I can assure you the principle is the same.

I PERSONALLY doubt that Microsoft even on the real person activation problems telephone line will be able to activate it for you due to the problems mentioned.

YOU will note on the link that a repair install does NOT FIX the problem
An in-place upgrade repair does not normally fix this type of corruption but no harm in trying.
It has been tried and it does NOT FIX the problem.
A repair install does reinstall windows but NOT all of the registry and of course not the user accounts etc.

IN SUMMARY - a clean install will fix it.

The choice is of course yours - either
1. TRY the real person contact from MIcrosoft
You mentioned
I did talk to a Microsoft-type site and they advised that I just "wait it out" to see if it's something at their end...
I am unsure what you mean by A MIcrosoft type site

You want
To activate Windows 11 by phone:

  1. Select Start > Settings > System > Activation.
  2. Under Activate Windows Now section, select Activate by Phone.
telphone the number it will ask which country you are in
and then give you the number.
It will first connect you to help but ask to speak to a real person.

2. CLEAN INSTALL Windows 11.
That is the easiest and most certain to be successful
Ensure you FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE carefully
(16) Clean Install Windows 11 Tutorial | Windows 11 Forum (elevenforum.com)
Start by reading the text in the yellow backround at point 7
If this is an OEM PC that has a valid product key embedded in its UEFI firmware chip, then you will not be prompted to enter a product key. Windows 11 will automatically use the embedded product key if its valid for the edition being installed
Also see the item at 10
YOU CLICK ON CUSTOM INSTALL

Point 19 may be relevant.
There are TOO many points to cover individually

3. Make sure you read through it carefully
NOTE you are best deleting all partitions and starting with unallocated space
However if you wish to keep the dell recovery partition - IT IS NOT REALLY WORTHWHILE doing so see point 11 which shows OEM reserved.
AND ensure you see below for the keeping a windows old folder
IN WHICH case you do NOT delete ALL PARTITIONS
you select the partition show on which windows is installed it will be shown as PRIMARY
see point
  • Delete all partitions on the Drive # (ex: Drive 0) you want to install Windows 11 until that Drive # shows only as one Unallocated Space, select the unallocated space, and click/tap on Next.
  • OR
  • Select a primary partition on a drive you want to install Windows 11,

4. IF YOU go down this route PLEASE ask if you encounter difficulties, although other than errors for some reason ALL points are covered in the link.

================================
5. DO NOT FORGET that a clean install WITH ALL PARTITIONS deleted will NOT save anything IN WINDOWS so you need to back up ALL personal files, data etc you want to keep

6.
However see this link for a clean install on the primary partition
How to: Perform a Custom Installation of Windows 11 and Windows 10 or - Microsoft Community
where a windows old folder will be created.
YOU WILL NOT BE able to reinstall any apps, games etc for which you do not have the installation media or obtain from the store

You will be able to get your pics, docs etc, but I still recommend a backup first.

7. Sorry cannot make it any easier.
Any questions please ask.

The frequent cause of the problem you appear to have is attempting to tweak windows by various methods often found on a web search to - do what is often referred to as make it go faster by disabling this and that including attempts to disable windows updates and various services which are often suggested will make it run better. GAMING tweaks are often a cause.
I do NOT suggest you have, but some sites offer a method of changing reported hardware statistics to give you a better score in gaming.
That is without doubt a way of producing a failed activation, as that, in the case of a digital licence depends on ther hardware hash of the computer

Thank-you for this Macboatmaster.
I am tempted to just run it the way it is but I will probably start backup files up and start working on your suggestion(s).
The easier thing is to just live with it but the computer-guy in me hates not knowing exactly what happened and wanting to fix things (even to the point of sometimes making things worse).

Well the choice is yours
I would at least recommend the first point I made on my reply
and the real person contact at Microsoft, albeit I doubt they will solve it for you.

You do not need backup files for the system file check or to contact Microsoft.

Althogh you can use the deactivated version you will not be able to change desktop settings or other personalisations and the main problem is that you wil only receive criticial security updates
YOU will not receive build updates or new versions.

Also other than as I have posted this site will not be able to help with any problems and many other such sites will not help either as soon as they find your windows 11 is not activated.

When I click on Activate Windows Now I do not get the option of Activate By Phone.
Image

And I did run a few SFC scans a few days ago but scannow came up with no errors.

You do you click contact support.

HOWEVER try this
DISCONNECT from the internet

Open a cmd prompt with admin rights

copy and paste this cmd

slmgr.vbs /ipk YTMG3-N6DKC-DKB77-7M9GH-8HVX7

do not try and type it in -unless you are EXTREMELY careful to get the spacing correct and indeed all digits.

If the cmd reports key changed successfully

RESTART the computer
That is restart NOT the normal shutdown
either the restart button on the tower OR
start icon hold mouse on
shutdown - etc
and then to right and click restart.

NOW connect to the internet and click ACTIVATION on settings.

When I run this I get the following message:

And then when I type in the slui.exe line I get:

And when I click on contact Microsoft by phone I get:

And when I try to contact Microsoft (at the very bottom of the page) I get:

Eventually I get to a video showing me how to activate Windows with a "proper" key.
I wonder how I can get my actual Windows key - I can't see it on the Dell invoice itself (or on the PC)?

I wonder how I can get my actual Windows key - I can't see it on the Dell invoice itself (or on the PC)?
I have already explained to you in detail that you do not have a key
The device came with windows 10 installed by Dell
The key used by Dell to install 10 was the one found by SHOW KEY
It is as I said NOT the key that activates Windows
That is done by digital activation against the hardware hash of the computer.
The key found by Microsoft merely verifies that the Windows 10 is genuine

They key I sent you is a generic Windows 10/11 Home key it will NOT activate windows, but by typing in that key, it MAY have then activated again against the hardware hash of the computer.

It failed because of the same error you have in the file system relating to activation

Going to the contact Microsoft you select the icon windows you then type in the box - cannot activate
A drop list appears
you select the one that applies
If you folow that procedure you should then get to activate by phone
IF YOU HAVE a Microsoft account you can sign in on that same window with that Microsoft account NOT the new one you established, butthe one used originally when Windows was activated and if the device was linked to the Microsoft account is should so the device in the listings

IF YOUR windows was linked to your Microsoft account by digital activation then it would have shown such when it was activated
See the link I sent you regarding the clean install

Macboatmaster - the clean install of Windows 11 worked!!
Thank-you (and all of the others) who provided the advice - I could not have solved it without you.

Thnak you for posting but you are not the discussion starter
Godier.glen
Kindly edit your post to say words to the meaning of
"I also had this problem etc."

The reason I ask is that it so easy for people to think the discussion is solved - not noticing that you are NOT as I said the owner of the discussion

WHY then do you have two accounts
That is not allowed under site rules

That said
Macboatmaster - the clean install of Windows 11 worked!!
So pleased to have helped and thank you for taking the time to post

I strongly advise you as mentioned to use Windows security and Microsoft Defender
FREE and 100% compatible with windows and all updates 100% of the time
Something that cannot be said re the 100% compatibility for many anti viruses

Also and please do not be offended - something most certainly caused the corruption of your activation files
There are many of them spread across various aspects of windows
I mentioned a couple of possible causes.
I do not know if they apply in your case.

Cheers
Macboatmaster

I have no idea how that happened - it certainly was not done on purpose.
The original post looks like it came in using Google - I never use Google to sign into other than Google apps.
Strange.
