I've been trying to set up Remote Desktop on my home computer (XP SP2) for the past few days, and I can't seem to get it to work with ZoneAlarm 6.5 (free version).

I know that ZoneAlarm is causing the problem because when I turn the firewall off, I am able to connect.

I've given Internet server access to svchost.exe, rdpclip.exe, winlogon.exe, logonui.exe, crss.exe, but I still can't connect. I've looked at adding port 3389 to the trusted zone, but it doesn't look like you can do this with the free ZoneAlarm.

I know that I can add IP ranges to the trusted zone, but I want to be able to do this from any IP. Any ideas are appreciated.

quoted from their website
"All paid versions of ZoneAlarm provide complete flexibility for customization in the "Expert Rules" tab of the Firewall panel. This feature is not available in the free ZoneAlarm."

You can try setting the security to medium and see if that works.

Hrm, I was afraid of that. Anyone know of any other good free software firewalls out there? Or do I even need one since I'm using a Netgear router? I like being able to see exactly what programs are trying to access the Internet, as it helps to identify nastyware.

Thanks,
~Ryan
