I am trying to use our own mail server for our domain. The network guy setup exchange and said that I need to edit my zone file so it points the ip of the in-house server instead of the mail server where the site is hosted.

The hosting company said I can't edit the zone file & that I would need to have the domain registrar do it. The registrar said they can only edit the zone file if the domain is parked there but since my domain is hosted elsewhere, the host needs to change it.

So in the hosting cpanel there is a DNS MX entry maintanence section.

I entered the the new ip address in the box so it says:

tpgpc.com: 12.219.161.239

Which shows the domain name and the ip I want mail to go to.

So if I ping mail.tpgpc.com it still shows the original ip of the host and not the new ip listed above.

Am I doing this all wrong or perhaps it takes a while for the address to resolve?

Sorry if the explanation is confusing,

Thanks,

-George
