Hi!

I made the mistake of downloading Smiley Central (knew it was a bad idea-- why'd I click OK?) and now "zestyfind" shows up everytime I open a new browser window and/or click onto a link. I am also having lack of resource problems. I have browsed your site, and you have suggested to others to download "HijackThis" and save a scan log. I have done so, and it is posted below. Any help in getting rid of this annoyance would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Restart to safe mode and delete:

The C:\WINDOWS\System\WINSTART001.EXE file

This file may be hidden so Click on My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Apply then OK. Click Yes to confirm.

How to start your computer in safe mode.

Boot back to normal.

Launch the application, and click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox.

Check all instances of inetadpt.dll (and nothing else) , and move them to the "Remove" pane.
Then click Finish.
Now start your computer in Safe Mode, and delete:

The c:\windows\system\inetadpt.dll

After all that come back and post another log. There is more to do, but I need to check on some new developments on this one first.

please do this so we can check if you are still infected by this pernicious parasite

Please download the KillBox from here:

http://download.broadbandmedic.com/VbStuff/KillBox.zip

UnZip it to it's own folder not to the Desktop or a Temp folder. Click on The KillBox.exe and it will open. Now click on the msg{} .dll find button. It will open another window with a list of .dll files in the upper portion and possibly a User Agent String in the lower portion. Click on the "Save Log" button in the upper right corner and copy and paste that log here please

Derek,

The new version of KillBox is completely different than the old one. That's what I was referring to when I said I needed to check on the new developments before proceeding. I downloaded the new KillBox last night and there isn't a way to save the log in it. I'm not sure exacly how we are to determine the presence of the files with the new version. If you found something in the new version that I missed please let me know.

As far as I know the most effective way to remove L2M now is freeatlast's method shown here:

http://www10.brinkster.com/expl0iter/freeatlast/L2M/Msg121.htm

I guess the best way to determine if indeed there is a L2M infection is to do a file search for the msg*** files.

psychesteph

Once you have completed the steps in my first post please do a file search and see if any of the following files are present on your machine:

msg116.dll
msg117.dll
msg118.dll
msg120.dll
msg121.dll

Let us know if you find any of those and we'll proceed from there.

press find then find msg.dll,
then on the little pop up window, that says killbox file list, press file/create log and a pop up says do you want to create a log in notepad, say yes and then save as usual in notepad and copy & paste

TY Derek. I guess I should have looked a little deeper. It was late last night when I downloaded it.

psychesteph

Do as Derek said in post #5 and post the log from KillBox.

Download Killbox (could not save a log to Notepad for some reason, but wrote down the files listed):

C:\WINDOWS\System\msg116.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System\msg117.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System\msg118.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System\msg120.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System\msg120.cpy.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System\msg121.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System\msg121.cpy.dll

I hope this is what you needed-- upon downloading lspfix, zesty was still showing up. Its not redirecting me anymore as far as I can tell, but I am still inundated with popups and now there is a new tool bar which looks zesty-related.

Thank you again for your help!

OK-- and thank you for your patience!-- I did as you suggested.

I went to the site, downloaded magicfix.zip. I followed all the instructions there to the letter, and when I go to double click on fixme.bat here's what happens:

A black DOS screen pops up stating "Bad Command or file name. Access denied."

Then an error message pops up stating: "Cannot import L2M. reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error."

Any suggestions? I ran a seach for the msg...dll files and now I only have msg121.dll left. Hopefully that's an improvement (but probably not!) =)

Thanks in advance!

Try the KillBox and click on Kill msg121.dll.

When that is finished click on Import L2M.reg.

I forgot to tell you that your computer will reboot without notice when you click the Kill msg121.dll , so don't have unsaved work, or excessive programs running when you do this.

So I opened Killbox and instead of just clicking the the buttong you suggested, I ran a search again, and manually killed the msg121.dll. There was also a msg121.cpy.dll found as well and I had to reboot to kill that one. Then I ran the file you suggested and it said sucessfully loaded to registry. Here is a copy of my most recent Hijack this log:

I don't see any more of those msg...dll files in the system, but I am still getting a lost of pop ups that I didn't get before and I still have that odd zesty-ish tool bar above. Any recommendations? Again, I GREATLY appreciate your help!

Hi again! Here's what I did:

Ran Hijack, fixed files.
Reboot Safe
Delete Squire
Looked for c:/sys_ai_client_loader.exe but could not find. Unhid all files, still not there. Did a search, still not found on system. Proceeded on.
Ran Killbox, deleted temp files, programs said it would keep ones necessary for current apps, and said I could do it manually, but did not do this.
Reboot Normal.
Picked up Taco Bell =)
Ran Adaware... (went to bed)
Found 714 items by morning. Deleted all but 12 which the program said it would delete on reboot.
Reboot (files not found after I searched) and Adaware re-ran and found nothing suspicious
Ran Spybot, would not download all updates but proceeded on.
Deleted 6 RED items.
Reboot.

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Delete these files
C:\WINDOWS\mwsvm.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\zsiyluvn.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\A.EXE
and Delete these folders
C:\PROGRAm files\TOOLBAR

then
Reboot normally & post another log to check please
