Hello, within the last 1.5 months I've upgraded my daughters Pentium III, 512MB RAM 8GB HD to WinXP from Win98...the machine ran like a jack rabbit
until I upgraded it to XP. Since then I have tried various ways to speed up not only the startup but the ways certain aspects of XP work (ie...choose the Classic view versus XP style).

In the process of tweaking XP somehow I have disabled the Start Menu | Windows Update and also XP's Defrag program...I double click on Windows Update and the hourglass appears quickly but then nothing happens. The XP Defrag program will load but it wont Analyze OR Defrag the C: drv...it just sits there doing nothing.

Can anyone tell me what Service I might have turned off or why this is happening?....thanks for your reply :)

When you "upgraded", did you do it as a "clean install", or an "upgrade"? I've had a fair amount of trouble doing an "upgrade" from 98/ME to XP. I stopped doing it! The way to go is to do a "clean install" of XP. It's a little involved if you have 98 as native, but it can be done. Also, 8g of hd sounds pretty skimpy. Maybe you should stick to 98.

You need a minimum of 15% free-space on the drive to run defrag. How much is there left?

Try running Disk Cleanup & CCleaner then delete all the files in the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder and then try running defrag.

Have you got SP2 installed?

It surely is better to do a clean install and just use the '98 CD as proof of having upgrade eligibility. The XP Upgrade CD will do a full install of XP and you won't have any left over '98 files on the drive.
