Ok... first: I don't know what I did. The first problem was that I couldn't click on links "go" on webpages. Nothing I did worked, so I tried repair (IE). That didn't work, so I tried to reinstall IE. That didn't work, and screwed up my computer so now when I turn it on I get a choice of what to log on to (XP setup or XP Home edition. I unstalled SP2, then reinstalled. Still same log on problem.

My computer reboots often. Especially when I run Spybot or Kaspersky AV. I ran trendmicro's housecall, and it didn't detect any viruses.

My computer runs hellishly slow.

I don't know what to do. I'm at my wits end. Here is what I have:

AMD Athlon 1.1
256K
Windows XP Home edition

I downloaded HijackThis and this is what follows:

You have a lot of spyware listed.

You need to download more Spyware and Trojan Removal programs.

SpySweeper:
http://www.webroot.com/wb/products/spysweeper/index.php
This will also protect your home page from being hijacked.

Ad-Aware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/

Also Microsoft just released a free beta one that is pretty good as well.

With any of the above programs, just like with Anti-Virus software, should have the latest updates installed before doing a scan. You should also boot to safe mode and scan from there as well (after getting the updates)

CWShredder:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe

KazaaBeGone
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/kazaabegone.zip

Programs that can help prevent getting infected:

Spyware Blaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Spyware Guard
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html

I can't get any spyware program to run fully.

Here's what I've done since my last post...

Ran Cookie Terminator
Ran Disk Cleanup
Ran AdAware
Ran PC Bug Doctor

Downloaded Microsoft's Beta AntiSpyware

In safe mode:

Ran SpyBot - computer rebooted before finishing
Ran Microsoft's AntiSpyware - rebooted before finishing

Computer still runs slow as molasses. What are your recomendations?

Thanks.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Winsock32driver] win32server.exe - two viruses has been identified with this file.

I would suggest installing SpywareBlaster first before doing anything. This will prevent any further attacks. Make sure you update it first.

Remove the HighJackThis entry and then go into safe mode and delete the file. I would also suggest maybe remove all of the O16s entries. It will not harm your system. Those are files that are downloaded from a site when you vist them, like Yahoo Games etc.

Ok... I think we're getting there. Here's what I've done.... All from safe mode.

Cleaned out all old programs from add/remove
Ran Scandisk - ok
Ran Defrag - ok
Cookie Terminator - ok
SpySweeper - ok
SpyBlaster - ok
Microsoft AntiSpyware - ok
Spybot - re-booted even in safe mode

Remaining problems:

After POST screen, I have to choose between XP home ed. or XP setup. It won't automatically take me in to XP. If I forget, or am too slow, it boots up to XP setup, and I have to cancel it before I can continue.

Even after I ran diagnostics, my computer is running really slow. Opening my IE window takes a few. So does anything else. Scrolling is hell. New Hijackthis log:

Ok... I think we're getting there. Here's what I've done.... All from safe mode.

Cleaned out all old programs from add/remove
Ran Scandisk - ok
Ran Defrag - ok
Cookie Terminator - ok
SpySweeper - ok
SpyBlaster - ok
Microsoft AntiSpyware - ok
Spybot - re-booted even in safe mode

Remaining problems:

After POST screen, I have to choose between XP home ed. or XP setup. It won't automatically take me in to XP. If I forget, or am too slow, it boots up to XP setup, and I have to cancel it before I can continue.

Even after I ran diagnostics, my computer is running really slow. Opening my IE window takes a few. So does anything else. Scrolling is hell. New Hijackthis log:

RAM-PAGE said:
Looks reasonable to me, although I'm no expert on HJT Logs. (I would delete those with a (no file) after them.)

Now your system is improved try running CCLeaner and EmpTemp then run Disk Cleanup , CheckDisk and defrag, and with all those programs add another 256Mb of RAM.

http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?t=315114&page=3
Well.... I did. Wasn't quite sure what to do with the EmpTemp, but I did the rest, except for the extra RAM. I am so disgusted. I want to fdisk and start over, but I have so much stuff I use on here, it would be hell to try to get it all back. My hard drive is a Maxtor 120. I keep it pretty clean, or so I thought before this problem. I'm at my wits end.

Still takes a moment for icons to open. I still have to choose XP Home edition after the POST screen. Why is that even there? How do I get rid of it? And now I'm having problems with my Radeon video card. I deleted it and reinstalled, but it still gives me problems.

I swear if you guys can help me get through this, I'll donate a fair sum to the cause.

Thanks.

Hello Linda. This appears to be a common error which many people make, so your not alone. I image the drive and never do a repair so I'm no expert on that, but what usually ahppens is that people think they can do an overinstall as they used to do with '98 & ME, something which has always been risky anyway.

With XP you should use SFC as you could do with '98. This has to be done with an XP CD which has the same service pack as is installed on the drive. SO if you have SP2 on the drive you need an XPSP2 CD.

Now most people have an XPSP1 CD and will need to slipstream their CD with SP2 to make themselves an XPSP2CD (I Use AutoStreamer 1·0) which is very easy to use.

You can then not only run SFC /SCANNOW to repair System files, you can also install the Recovery Console to the Hard-Drive.

So why are you getting the XP Setup appearing? (I don't knw.) So I'll ask you to post your BOOT.INI file so that we can all take a look at it.

Go to the Control Panel, System, Advanced Start-Up and Recovery and click the Edit... Button. Copy and paste your boot.ini file.

This is what mine looks live:

[boot loader]
timeout=4
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

If you don't have the last line it is because you haven't installed the Recovery Console to your hard-drive. You can do that later if you want to. You'll find out how in Help and Support.

Your boot.ini might look like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=4
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

With the amount of programs you have you very definitely need another 256Mb of RAM and if the motherboard has three slots I would put in at least 3 x 256Mb, if not 3 x 512Mb, depending on what the maximum is that the motherboard is capable of running. (Some can run 4 x 1024Mb)

It will make the system run much better. You might consider installing a 20Gb Master drive and, after it has the OS installed to it, coupling the 120Gb drive to it as a slave drive on which to keep all your data.

BEFORE attempting any of this I would back up your data to Data DVDs. So keep your money for more RAM and a DVD Burner, if you haven't got one already.

Next about the Radeon video card. Make sure that it is properly seated in the expansion slot and that it has a retaining screw holding it in place.

(Good time to fit the RAM)

You can also see what the rating is on your power supply, if you will, and post it here.

To check the adequacy of your power supply take a look at this site: http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/
