xp missing taskbar & desktop icons - zlob virus?

2421 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Cookiegal
Hi this problem appeared a couple of nights ago and I haven't been able to get to the bottom of it, any advice gratefully recieved. I will have to do a XP reinstall tomorrow morning if I can't fix it

After logon screen the desktop picture loads and then everything goes quiet. Ctrl-alt-del will bring up task manager and can access everythign through "run".

After about 5 mins or so, very gradually the taskbar reappears as do the desktop icons. The taskbar is never fully working though and clicking on it will cause explorer to stop responding.

I suspect I have the zlob virus as this was picked up by a scanner but i cannot delete it or find it now. Any suggestions, I've run about 8 virus scanners and none seem to be picking anything up. Have run in safe mode/ disabled system restore/ cleaned registry etc etc

I don't want to reinstall but its almost come to it.

Thanks, Tom

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Extract (unzip) the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

Warning: Do not run Option #2 until you are instructed to do so. Running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
