Firstly this is post on behalf of somebody else so I apologise for any lack of depth in regards the description.

He has what I think it the strangest xp problem I have come across. He has just had new computer arrive with XP home on (general set up is 2 200gb hard drives, 1 cd drive and 1 dvd drive), he then went to put on a copy of xp professional, and it started to upgrade. However it then crashed giving a message about 'Asms' file, it does this repeatedly.

I am not at this point to concerned with the ins and outs of problems with this set of files, as its other things that the computer is doing that causes me/him more problems. He has tried booting from the XP cd (going through the various blue screens) and just installing a fresh copy, but when it gets to selecting a partition, is comes up with 4 unknown partitions, no file sizes or nothing.

Whenever I have done it has come up with 2 partitions (my c and d drive) and the sizes. Anyway whenever he selects the up or down key to select one of these partitions it crashes, saying an error has occurred.

I then decided it would be a good idea and just format the HD, and stat again. So he entered the recovery console and entered the command to format the c drive, at which point it came up with “cannot format removable media”, he tried the all different letter and the same thing. Almost as if windows is seeing all the drives (cd and hd) as cd drives????

This has got me stumped.
