XP InstallShield/Windows Installer Problems

I tried to download iTunes earlier today, but it didn't quite work. The first error happened as I tried to setup iTunes. It got as far as "iTunes is preparing Installshield Wizard", but then an error message with the number 1607 popped up saying "Unable to install Installshield scripting runtime". So I downloaded IsScript8, the version that InstallShield Customer Service said I need to most likely fix the problem (see consumer.installshield.com). Unfortunately, an error message saying, "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed..." came up.

Possibly related as well is my computer's inability to use XP's automatic updates. An error message appears saying, "The Windows Service Pack installation did not complete. This system is in an unstable state. Go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs and choose to uninstall the Windows Service Pack, or contact your system administrator." I went into the Add or Remove Programs, found a "Windows Service Pack 2", decided that must be the one, started to remove it, and got a warning saying that virtually everything on my computer may be unuseable if the service pack is removed.

I don't know where to go from here, and any advice would be appreciated.
