I used to have a rotten old MS operating system and have had XP for several months which has been so much better except I used to be able to open .pdf files with my old Adobe Reader or Acrobat software - ever since I updated to Adobe Reader 6 and even 6.01 and even Acrobat Professional trial version my computer isn't opening up any .pdf files - what the @#!? am I doing wrong!? Would sure appreciate any help you can suggest. In Reader, b4 I added the Professional trial Acrobat version, I tried putting the plug-ins in an optional file to no avail. Thanks

Find a pdf file and right click on it while holding down the Shift key, select open with, choose acrobat from the list of applications, put a check in Always use this program...

Now does it work?

I didn't know I could open a .pdf file that way! but tried it and it is still doing what it has been ever since I switched to the newer version of Adobe Reader/Adobe Acrobat: it starts to open the software and the opening picture for the software just stays there "forever". When I look at the task manager it shows the software is using from 85 to 98% of my cpu availability. I have a Sony Vaio with a 1,000 mhz Athlon chip. Would it have anything to do with antivirus software??

try opening up acrobat press File on the toolbar>Open...>Browse to the file you want to open and open it. Other than that all i can think is maybe the pdf is corrupted or incompatible or something (which doesnt sound right :p) How many different pdf's have you tried to open? Does it give you an error message when opening? If so wat does it say?

Every time I try to open Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader (or ANY .pdf file) all I get is the initial picture of the program trying to open on my screen but it never opens up - so something on my computer must be preventing it from opening the program. When I control/alt/delete to get to the Windows Task Manager it shows very high cpu usage for Acrobat in the listing but doesn't show it in the applications tab lising - so apparently it is trying to open it but isn't being successful. I even tried turning my anti-virus software and then opening a file or the software. I can't be the only person who has had this problem!! so any additional suggestions would be most appreciated!

From adobe support forums....
Have a look at this KB article and see if it helps.

Please note you MUST have your system set to show hidden and system files and folders when looking for the acr*.tmp files or you wont be able to see them.

http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/31e12.htm

Basically it says to find and remove all (including hidden/system) files labelled acr*.tmp.

Also, try to log into your machine as another user and see if that works. The tmp files are user specific.
