I just installed RH9 with xmms 1.2.10 and it plays MP3 properly. But I can't get it to play the next song from the play list. I have to play the next song manually.

Has anyone encounter this problem before?

In the drop down menu I pick to play a directory and not a file,david

I have the same as you RH9 and xmms 1.2.10 and works perfectly !

Try eventually reinstall xmms 1.2.10 .
No other suggestions!

I forgot to mention something:

when I reinstalled xmms1.2.10 (I had before problems with 1.2.5-7) I downloaded the SOURCES and compiled them:
./configure
make
make install

last cmmd as superuser.
