Hello Paul...welcome to the board.
What seems to have happened is that the updated virus scan found a trojan and deleted it. If you are getting messages like "Cannot find xawhlk.exe. This program is needed..." when you attempt to open files with an EXE extension, this means that xawhlk.exe has been inserted in the registry path to open EXEs.
If this is the case, download EXEFix08.zip from:
http://home.earthlink.net/~rmbox/Reticulated/Toys.html
Save it to the desktop, unzip it and run EXEFix08.com to repair the registry association. If you don't have an unzip program, use the Only_IE link at the bottom of the page.
Let us know how it goes.
