Word won't prompt to save changes

Whenever I go to close a word window, the computer automatically saves the document as document1, document2, or whatever. It doesn't ask if I want to save changes or what I want to save it as. How can I change it back to the way that it was? I'm using word 97.

Do Step 3 of troubleshooting word at:

www.TheOfficeExperts.com/word.htm

That should do it.

Oh...and run a virus scan with new data files because that sounds like an old macro virus. But the fix should still fix it.
