Is there a work-around for this MS Word quirk?

If you number the pages in a document such that the first 3 pages, for example, are in lower case roman numerals. Then you restart the numbering on the 4th page so that it begins at 1 (one).

Let's say the document has a total of 23 pages; the first 3 in the intro part followed by 20. The last page autonumbers to 20.

If you then insert a Page X of Y, the page numbers show Page 8 of 23 instead of Page 8 of 20. In legal documents, it needs to show "of 20" and not "of 23."

Any way around this?

Maybe a formula or something subtracting a specific number from the Total Number of Pages?

haven't had to do that in a long time, here's a workaround tho:

move the intro, notes, index, reference pages - whatever you DON"T want counted - to another doc

then the main doc will only count the ones you want per your example

Try this. Insert a section break after the first 3 pages. Then in e.g. the footer for page 4 (1st page of 2nd section ; NB - "same as previous" must be off), insert the page number from Header & Footer toolbar. Highlight this and "Format Page Number" to start at 1. Then type " of " (no quotes). Then choose Field from the Insert menu. Choose Numbering, then Section Pages.

EXCELLENT! This works as long as the remainder of the document has no section breaks, which in my case it did.
