Won't DeFrag

850 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  JayT
This is the error message I get:

This application has failed to start because MFC42u.dll was not found. Re-Installing the application may fix this problem.
Do I delete it? Do I find that MFC42u.dll? I don't know what to do. I need to defrag, but I can't do it.

I keep reading about Scan Disk. I don't have that on my computer. Do I need that too? I have XP

I'm a big fan of Diskeeper. If it were me, I'd just get it and use it instead. It has some great features that the built-in defraggers don't have, like running in the background, and not quitting when it encounters open apps (my biggest complaint with the built-in programs)....

As for Scan Disk, are you absolutely sure you don't have it ? It comes as part of Windows. Look in Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools.
type "chkdsk /r" into a command prompt and do what it says.
that is the scan disk program for xp
I have disk cleanup, but no scan disk.
Whaddya know -- I don't, either (on my XP -- I have it on Win98).

Well, try what BigTuna says. That should work.
You can also find it (see this) :
http://www.pctechguide.com/tutorials/HDDMaint_Chkdsk.htm

And you can download the dll file from here:

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?mfc42u

Put in in C:\WINDOWS\system32\
