1 - Do you have a wireless card in your PC?

2 - Do you have a wireless router hooked up to your broadband connection?

If you answered 'no' to those questions, you need to buy the hardware first.

The router sends the signal from your broadband modem wirelessly throughout your house. The wireless card receives the signal and connects your computer to the internet.

thanks, is the wireless card something I can install myself ??
if you can open your computer and plug in a card then yes you can.

does your computer have a slot open?

also for versitility you can get a wireless to plug in a usb port but it
will be slower than a card plugin.

The first question here is do you have a laptop or a desktop?

Then, what operating system are you running? This will help us provide you instructions for determining what network adapters are installed on your system.

Also, what type of broadband connection do you have? Is it DSL or cable? What is the make and model of any equipment you received from your broadband provider?

DO NOT open your computer until you've answered these questions.

Hi,

I have a desktop it operates on windows XP and am using BT broadband think it is DSL the router I'm currently using is a BT Voyager 205 ADSL.

Does that make sense ?

Thanks

Right-click on My Computer and click Properties. Click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button. Expand Network Adapters. Post here everything that's listed in that category. That will tell us if you already have a wireless adapter or not. I'm guessing not since it's a desktop, and they usually don't ship with wireless network adapters.

If your computer doesn't have a wireless NIC, you have to purchase one. You can get either a PCI card that goes into an open PCI slot on the motherboard, or you can get a USB adapter that plugs into a free USB port on the computer.

I don't believe what you have has any wireless capabilities, so you have to purchase a wireless router or access point. If you get the wireless router, you'll have to configure it differently since it looks like your modem is also a router.
