Hello all,

I'm trying to set up a fairly simple home network. Here's what I've done:

-I have two PCs running WinXP Pro
-Each is configured with the same Workgroup
-Each has four local users named for each of my family members
-The PCs connect through a cable modem router, and each currently can connect to the internet with no problems
-Each PC has two hard drive partitions (C for OS/Programs, D for data)

I'd like to map the Y drive on each computer to the other computer's C drive, and map Z to D. This way, at any given time I can "see" all of the data on either computer. It also helps because I'd like to use a backup program to back up key files on each nightly, one to the other.

Here's the problem that I'm running into:

When I try to map to "PC03" from "PC02", it first tries to connect using my current local account (PC02\MyID), and then failing that, the Guest account on the other PC (PC03\Guest). MyID is an admin on both machines. I've tried connecting as an admin on the other machine, for example connecting from PC02 as PC03\MyID. This gets me a connection, but when I try to click on certain folders like Program Files or Documents and Settings for another user, I get "access denied", even though I'm connected as an admin.

On the "target" PC, I enabled sharing of the C: drive on the network, and checked "allow network users to change my files".

So, perhaps the simplest way of putting this question: how can I have mapped drives to my other PC, wherein I have full control of everything?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have another question, but it's a slightly different topic, so I'll post separately.

Thanks,

Steve

I have the same issue as posted. I cannot seem to get connections between my 3 computers. At 1 point I was able to see 1 directory, but that is gone now.
I have used the auto setup of XP network, to no avail.

PS. File sharing is on

Do you have all firewalls turned off? Also, check the XP firewall by clicking on your network connection icon in the taskbar and selecting Properties. Then click on the Advanced tab and make sure that the Internet Connection Firewall box is not checked.

Secondly, make sure that Netbios is turned on in your TCP/IP stack. To do this go to the network connection and click on Properties again. Highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and click on Properties. Click on Advanced. Click on the WINS tab. Make sure that Enable Netbios over TCP/IP is selected. Close all Windows and reboot.

Also, have you tried rebooting everything? Turn off the modem, the router, and the PCs. (Probably not necessary to turn off the modem, but it won't hurt.) Turn on the modem and wait a couple minutes. Turn on the router and wait a couple minutes. Then turn on the PCs. Now see if sharing works.

Finally, are you using passwords with your User ID's? Sometimes XP is very "finicky" about requiring passwords with User ID's in order to access shared resources.

If none of this works, we can try access via IP address. Come back here for instuctions.

It seems like the network functions fine for the original person that started the thread. It's just that he can't access certain restricted directories.

If it were a firewall or NetBIOS setting which got changed from the default (have yet to see where anyone actually did this inadvertently), likely there wouldn't be any access at all.

Ok, I was under the impression (or maybe mis-impression) that while Internet access was working fine, that sharing had not been successful for any shared resources. If this is true than firewalls or Netbios (less likely, I admit) could possibly be the problem. If some shares are working and others are not, then Bob is correct.
