HELP, i have noticed there have been no automatic updates and security updates from windows updates website since november 2005. the computer will not allow me to go to the windows update website. the page freezes as soon as i try. i have tried different ways to no avail. i also cannot restart windows xp or shut down the computer without pushing button on the tower. i have plenty of virus protection which shows no problems.
IS my windows xp missing files or corrupted?
thanks for any help, PMS

Sounds like your Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is screwed up, which can be caused by running the Norton removal tool SymNRT among other things.

To restart your BITS:

Start > Run > services.msc
Find Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
Right-Click > Properties
From the Startup Type drop down menu choose Automatic
Click the Start tab button to start the service

Now try to manually get a Windows update from the Windows update website.

If that fails, enter the following manually, one at a time. (and wait for confirmation after each one, the regsvr32 initpki.dll can take especially long)

To enter manually, Start > Run then enter the following:

regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

After all that, Start > Run > NET START BITS

Hopefully that solves your Windows update problem.
