Is windows XP home edition suitable for a stand-alone development setup at home?What is the difference with the professional edition?

XP Pro has more Networking and File Sharing Features than does XP Home.

so if we want to do stand-alone C++/java development at home -either Xp home or professional should be adequate?

If the program suite will run on an XP platform, then yes.
