My pc is nearly 6 months old, i reformatted about 2 weeks ago just to start fresh and get rid of unneeded crap, i reinstall my avast anti virus i did windows update and spybot scan as soon as i got the system running again but i have encounterd a problem i have not had before.

When i log-on to my user i see all desktop icons but 70% of the time the proper windows start up of programs stops and windows seems to crash. I still see my desktop but i cannot click anything.

If i do ctrl alt delete all 35 of my processes are running and if i end task on the explorer.exe then run the explorer.exe again about 40% of the time i can carry on using the computer, but this is getting very irratating for me and i just want my pc to work like normal, has anyone any idea whats the problem?

Forgot to mention I'm using Windows XP SP2.

If you did your motherboard drivers after new install, and you have startup under control(Run,msconfig,ok,startup), then it could mean the beginnings of hard drive troubles.
You can download utilities from hard drive manufacturers to test the drive or drives.
