Windows media player took over my computer -Vista

The Media player took over my computer a few months back. I have Vista & when I try and go into programs on my computer the Windows Media Player pops up and says can not read file. because of this I can't access the programs to try and change what is happening. I wanted to try & use Restore to find a restore date about 4 months back to fix this but I can't access Restore because Media Player is what tries to open it & can't of course. I tried the F8 option when turning the computer on & it logs it in safe mode but when I click on Restore in that nothing pops up. Then I found the option in my researching to restore using Windows Recovery Environment. but In order to start the Windows Recovery Environment you must boot your computer off of the Windows Vista DVD that you purchased or that came with your computer. My computer never came with one when I bought it. I would like to know how I can either restore it back about 4 months or fix it without having it reset 7+ years to factory settings & losing everything...... Please help me. Thank you

Hello,
First you should consider doing an offline scan of your computer just in case this issue was caused by malware (means boot from a resque CD like UBCD or Hiren's Boot CD).
After that, you can navigate to C:\Windows\System32 and locate rstrui.exe - that is the System Restore app. Double click it directly to launch it.
