I've been trying to repair an old Windows ME machine. I tried reformatting and installing the OS, but it is not working. Same situation as when prior to attempting fix: I boot up the machine, then while it is booting up it eventually starts a scan disk then shuts off. Sometimes it will ask me before ME starts in the boot prompt. Even in safe mode the same issue. I had a similar issue with an old Windows 2000 (check my post), but it didn't work.

Could it be the motherboard or the HD? I don't believe it's the HD.

Can anybody please assist?

All you have to do is make a setting change in the MSDOS.SYS file.

Double-click the C: drive in MY COMPUTER to open its contents.

Right-click the MSDOS.SYS file, then click Properties.

Uncheck "Read only", then click Apply - OK.

Double-click the MSDOS.SYS file to open it.

If "Autoscan" is set on 1 or 2 or 3, change it to 0.

Click File - Save - File - Exit.

Right-click the MSDOS.SYS file, then click Properties.

Recheck "Read only", then click Apply - OK.

Restart your computer.

What I am saying is I don't get that far. That's the problem. This happens in under a minute of turn the machine on.

You said you formatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows ME and are still having the same problem, so it's possibly a hardware issue.

What could be causing it on the hardware side?
