I have an ibm laptop which for some reason would not allow me to change the screen setting to a res above 640 x 840? Every time I tried to change the settings and re-start it would default back to 640. A "friend" tried to fix the problem by changing the file name to the "neomagic display adapter" .vxd file??? Now the computer will not even boot up. Upon start I get a message that the "following file is missing or corrupted"

Is there any kind of an easy fix for this problem? Thanking you in advance.

It sounds like your video drivers got corrupted. Can you boot to safe mode(press F8 as the computer is starting up)? If so go to IBM's web site, locate your laptop, and download and install the correct video driver.
