Windows installer service not automatically starting

It's not often that I go to tech support. In fact, I usually AM the tech support (for friends and family). Every so often, however, every single person comes across something that they just can't solve.

I'm not 100% sure what caused it, but it's obviously not normal. I've ruled out "virus", however. The Windows Installer service does not automatically start with the computer, and even when started manually it does not stay that way for long (anywhere from 45 sec to 4 min). I've tried setting it to automatic, to manual, installing the newest WI, setting that to automatic, and again to manual. Nothing seems to work.

This isn't a huge issue, as I don't install a lot of things. It is annoying, however. As a programmer, I make installer packages and test them. I just don't like getting "Windows installer service cannot be accessed" errors and having to open services.msc and manually starting it every time I want to install something.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much,
Alex

The service should be set to "Manual" and does not start with Windows or continue to run when started manually. That is normal. It starts when needed.

Other problems with the service are due to either registry errors or file system problems. Please provide as many details of the problem as you can, when it occurs, and the full literatim text of any error messages you have received.

Have you tried updating the installer? I'm not sure what the latest is (and I'll help you find it if you haven't by the time I get back), but updating or just reinstalling it may well solve any problems. Search for the download.

OK. I will supply you with a repair for the registry as soon as I boot up a VM later. But what exactly happens in the services console when you attempt to start the service? What message do you get?

On the property sheet for that service, what does it say for "Path to executable"?

Here are the registry entries for the installation server. Unzip it, right-click the reg file inside, and choose "Merge" to merge it with your registry. Reboot and try an installation.
