windows explorer problem

my windows explorer has been messing up a lot lately, and ive noticed that i can never get .wmv and such to work when someone sends me one. it's like windows media player pops up to play it then it gets an error and says that the error occurs here..
C:\DOCUME~1\Trey\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER21.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

sometimes an error will just happen when i'm browsing through a folder with media files..

i have a Dell Dimension 8100 and i'm running windows xp professional

all i would say is that if its a windows media player problem try uninstalling it in ad remove programs and reinstall it again from the microsoft site after downloading the full install file. dont use windows updates as this could have been your problem. this should solve it.
