Whenever i turn my computer on, it doesnt boot up properly. I pressed the switch button it shows the XP home logo then when the screen turns blank it remains blank, i waited 10 minutes for this and nothing comes up, so i turned it off again, then i turned it back on, this time i had this message:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Start Windows Normally

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.

Seconds until Windows starts: 30

I picked Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked) the windows xp logo shows and the same thing happened (blank screen) so i had to turn it off again this time i picked Start Windows Normally and that doesnt work either, i had to do this 8 times, i chose Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked) again then finally it worked. i chose safe mode, the programs come up and when i restart it again, it takes another 3 times to boot up properly, i have not install any hardware recently.

However sometimes it works the first time i turn it on. The switch on my pc is loose so sometimes when i switch it on sometimes the button gets stuck, is this the cause of he problem? please help this is really annoying

Thanks

First thing is to fix the power button so it does not stick any more and this is best done with the power cable unplugged. You will have to remove the front panel of the computer several times to make sure where you set the switch is correct but once the switch operates with out hanging up you can leave the front panel on then plug in the power cord. The reason for your problem is that the switch has stuck and there is a circuit on the motherboard that has a relay that is responsible for turning the power on or off depending on whether it is open or closed and a power switch that is sticking can actually short the relay out and then you will have to replace the motherboard.

Get the switch working properly then try starting the computer and see if you can boot if you can not then try booting into safe mode and see if this is successful.
