Was there any other text displayed with the error? Can you provide us with the exact text of the error?
windows 98
I cannot get to windows 98 after i boot up. The windows 98 logo appears and then it says "explorer has performed an illegall procedure , must shut down." Then i get a black screen. I cant get into "safe mode" , the same thing happens. What do i do?

You can restore a backup copy of the Registry to fix the problem. Boot to MS-DOS use the hard drive or the Windows Startup floppy. Then type: SCANREG /RESTORE
A menu will be presented with a list of up to 5 backups. Pick the most resent and follow the instructions. If it does not work try another.
