Here's one that's new to me:

on a W2K machine, IPCONFIG /renew fails because :

"Unexpected network failure or insufficient access"

anyone ever seen this before?

Before, it had

"An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket"

so I unintsalled the network adapter, reboot, uninstall TCP/IP, reboot, delete all Winsock and Winsock2 registry keys, reboot, reinstall TCP/IP and the network card, and now I get that
first message.

Of course, I am logged in as Administrator. No viruses I've found, but there was a lot of spyware/adware/malware installed, I think I killed it all off..

What is your system connected to - a router? If so, you need to reboot the router - and if the router is connected to a modem, it wouldn't hurt to reboot the modem. If you haven't already tried this, here is the sequence:

Power off the modem, router, and all PCs. Wait a couple of minutes and power up the modem. Wait a couple of minutes and power up the router. Wait a couple minutes and turn on the PCs.

I've seen this before, and rebooting the modem and router fixed it.

If this fixes your problem, I would see if there is a firmware upgrade for your router. :)
